Solved the wrong thing
Your work is right and the number you land on is real, but it answers a different question than the one asked: an earlier step, a related quantity, or simply the wrong variable.
How to spot it
Look for an answer choice that gives a correct intermediate result, a related quantity, or the value of the wrong variable. The work may be mathematically sound, but the answer does not match what the question asks for. A useful signal is that the choice names or represents something from the setup rather than the requested result. This pattern can appear even when every calculation before the final choice is correct.
Before choosing it, compare the answer directly with the final noun, variable, unit, or quantity named in the question. If those do not match, the work stopped on the wrong target. Also check the form of the answer. A question asking for a rate should not end with a total, even if that total was needed.
What it looks like
A rectangle has an area of 60 square inches. The setup gives a student enough to find the width, and the student correctly works out that the width is 5 inches. The question asks for the length.
Wrong answer: 5, the width.
Correct answer: 12, the length, which is 60 divided by 5.
The wrong answer fails because 5 is a real result of correct work, and it is sitting right there in the choices. It is just not the quantity the question asked for. Finding the width was a necessary step, not the destination.
Why it works on people
Solving a problem creates a strong sense of completion. Once a clean value appears, students often treat that value as the destination. This is especially tempting when the calculation was difficult. Attention shifts from the wording of the question to the success of the algebra. The wrong answer rewards correct work that stops before the final step or follows the wrong variable.
How to beat it
Use a target check before you calculate. First, mark what the question wants by naming the exact quantity briefly. Next, attach that target to a variable, unit, or label in your work. Then solve normally. Before selecting an answer, compare your result with the marked target.
The check should be literal. If the question asks for adult tickets, your final line should say adult tickets. If it asks for a length, your final result should represent that length. If your work ends with another quantity, keep going or return to the setup.
A reliable sequence is: identify the target, solve, label the result, then match the label to the question. Do not let a correct calculation substitute for answering the actual question.

Counted in September 2026: 2,698 of the 19,627 questions in our practice bank contain this trap, across 3,470 separate answer choices. Some questions use it more than once.
Related patterns
- True but not asked: that one is a statement the text supports, chosen instead of the one that answers the question. This one is a number you worked out yourself, and the work stopped on the wrong quantity. The tell is where the answer came from: you calculated this, you only read that.
- Reversed relationship: The answer flips the direction of a relationship, rather than solving accurately for the wrong target.
- Sounds right, never said: The choice feels plausible without support from the question, while solved the wrong thing is usually supported by real work aimed at the wrong quantity.
