Reversed relationship
Both halves of the choice really are in the passage, but the link between them runs backwards: the effect becomes the cause, or the later event is placed first.
How to spot it
This pattern usually shows up in reading comprehension questions that ask about cause and effect, historical timelines, or scientific processes. You will see an answer choice that accurately names two specific things discussed in the text. What gives it away is the word joining those two familiar things. Look closely for directional words like "caused," "led to," "resulted from," "enabled," or "followed." If the answer choice uses these specific words to link two real details from the passage, you must check the direction of the action. The trap exists when the passage clearly states that one event caused another, but the answer choice claims the exact opposite.

The sudden increase in urban temperatures during the 1920s prompted city planners to rethink park designs. In an effort to mitigate the extreme heat, planners planted wide canopies of elm trees to cool the streets. This massive push for green space eventually led to a measurable drop in average summer temperatures across the city by 1935.
Question:
Based on the text, what was the relationship between elm trees and urban temperatures?
A) The drop in summer temperatures allowed planners to successfully plant elm trees across the city. (Wrong: Reversed relationship)
B) City planners used elm trees to reduce rising urban temperatures. (Correct)
Why the trap fails:
Choice A flips the cause and the effect. The text says the planting of the elm trees led to the drop in summer temperatures. Choice A turns that around and claims the drop in temperatures is what let the planners put the trees in. The trees and the temperature drop both appear in the text, and both appear in Choice A, but the arrow between them runs the wrong way.
Why it works on people
This trap relies heavily on memory and word recognition. When you quickly scan an answer choice, your brain immediately spots familiar nouns from the passage. You remember reading about urban temperatures, and you remember reading about elm trees. Because both halves of the sentence feel completely true to your memory, you might skip reading the connecting verb. Test writers know that under strict time pressure, a rushed student will see two correct facts and accept the whole answer choice as true. The student ignores that the arrow of logic points the wrong way.
How to beat it
Beat this pattern by drawing the arrow before you read the choices. When a question asks about causes, effects, historical sequences, or scientific processes, go back to the passage and work out what happened first and what it led to. Write it on your scratch paper as two things with an arrow between them, pointing from the cause to the effect. Then check each choice against that arrow. If a choice runs the other way, cross it out. Read the verb that joins the two ideas, because that verb is what carries the direction, and two choices can name the same pair of ideas while only one connects them correctly.
