Most ACT prep still describes the old exam

Since 2025 the ACT composite is the average of English, Math and Reading. Science is optional, reported separately, and combined with Math into a STEM score. It is no longer in the number colleges quote.

That is a large change and a lot of material has not caught up. A practice test that averages four sections into a composite is scoring an exam that no longer exists, and it will tell you the wrong thing about where your points are. Every form here uses the current structure.

What a full-length form contains

Reading, English and Science use authentic passage sets rather than unrelated one-off questions, so a passage carries its full run of questions the way it does on the real test. Math is four answer choices, matching the enhanced format. Scoring uses the published 1 to 36 conversions.

Every wrong answer is named

8,142 wrong answer choices across the ACT bank carry a label saying what they do, across 58 distinct patterns that appear at least twenty five times. After you pick one, you are told which pattern it was rather than only that it was wrong.

The patterns are specific to what each section does. On Reading the largest groups are answers that state the reverse of the passage and answers that give a real meaning of a word that is not the meaning it carries there. On Math the largest is a clean calculation of the wrong quantity. On English roughly a third of wrong answers break no grammar rule at all and fail the goal the question set.

How the questions are checked

• Every question is solved independently by reviewers that did not write it, and disagreement stops it shipping.
• Maths answers are verified symbolically, with every option evaluated so exactly one is defensible.
• Science figures and tables are checked against the data they display.
• Reading questions must be answerable from the passage in front of you.

What we do not claim

These are not official ACT materials. ACT publishes free practice tests of its own, and those are the ones to work through first. This is what to use once you have finished them, or when you want a section test rather than a full sitting.

We have no study showing this raises your score, so we do not say it does. A practice composite is an estimate with real uncertainty around it.
