Read the wrong row
The arithmetic is right and the answer is wrong, because the number came out of the wrong row, column, series or trial. It is a reading error wearing the costume of a maths error.
How to spot it
Nothing about the working looks wrong. You subtracted correctly, you divided correctly, you read a number off a chart and used it exactly as you meant to. The number was simply not the one the question asked about.
It happens where a figure has more than one of something. Two lines on the same axes. A table with a row per material and a column per temperature. Three trials of the same experiment. A bar chart where the categories are close in height and adjacent on the page.
The specific tell is that the wrong answer is a real number from the real figure. It is not invented and it is not miscalculated, which is why checking your arithmetic never finds it. You can redo the division four times and get the same wrong answer, because the division was never the problem.
Watch for the question that names a condition rather than a quantity: at a stated temperature, for the medium order, in the second trial. Those phrases are doing the work of pointing at one row, and they are easy to read past when the figure is busy.

Wrong answer: 88 seconds. That is the right concentration column and the wrong temperature row.
Correct answer: 44 seconds.
Why it works on people
A figure asks you to hold a position in mind while you do something else with it. You locate the row, then look across for the column, and by the time your eye lands the row has quietly become the one above or below.
The pressure of the clock makes it worse in a particular way. Under time you stop tracing with a finger or a cursor and start jumping straight to the region of the page where the answer lives, which is the moment the row and its neighbour become interchangeable.
And the wrong answer never feels wrong. Every other kind of mistake leaves something odd behind, an impossible negative, a number far too large. This one leaves a plausible figure that belongs to a real condition, just not yours.
How to beat it
Read the question and underline the condition before you look at the figure at all. The words naming a temperature, or the medium order, are the instruction; the figure is only where the instruction gets carried out.
Then find the row first and commit to it, out loud or with a finger, before looking for the column. Two separate locating steps are slower than one sweep and far more reliable, and on a busy table the sweep is where the error lives.
When you have your number, do one check that costs a few seconds: say what the number means in words. Forty-four seconds, at the temperature the question named, at low concentration. If the sentence you just said does not contain the condition the question named, you have the wrong cell.
On charts with several series, check the legend against the line you actually traced rather than the one nearest your answer.

Counted in September 2026: 661 of the 19,627 questions in our practice bank contain this trap, across 1,256 separate answer choices. Some questions use it more than once.
