Paper testing is reserved for disability access

The SAT can still be taken on paper. It is available only as an approved accommodation for a student with a documented disability.

Paper testing is for students who cannot use a computer because of their disability. The request must explain why digital testing will not work. It also asks whether built-in tools or another accommodation could solve the access problem.

That makes this different from choosing between paper and digital practice. A student cannot request paper because handwriting feels easier, screens feel tiring, or paper seems more familiar. Those concerns may be real. They do not establish the documented need College Board requires.

College Board will also look at the student's normal use of technology. Does the student use a computer in class or outside school? Could zoom, a screen reader, or another approved tool make digital testing possible? The documentation must support the specific request.

Approval from a school alone is not enough. College Board's Services for Students with Disabilities must approve the accommodation before the SAT. Testing on paper without that approval can put the score at risk.

The request clock can run for seven weeks

College Board says an accommodations request can take up to seven weeks to review. The clock does not start until the office has all required documentation.

A request can take longer when information is missing. College Board may ask for more records. A request that is sent back for another review takes more time again, so a denial late in the process can push you past a test date.

This is why the published deadline comes well before test day. The deadline is not the day to begin gathering records. It is the date by which the request and required documentation must be received.

The easiest route is usually through the student's school. Ask for the staff member who handles College Board accommodations. That person can submit the request, check its status, and confirm how the approved plan will be given.

Families can submit without a school, but that does not shorten the review. Either route needs time for records, consent, submission, and possible follow-up questions.

Each SAT Weekend date has its own deadline

There is no single August deadline for paper SAT requests. College Board publishes a separate accommodations deadline for each SAT Weekend date.

As of July 30, 2026, the table below lists the future test dates in College Board's published 2026 to 2027 schedule.

The first two deadlines in that table have already passed. A student planning for October has only until August 14 to get the full request received. A student planning for November has until September 18.

Missing a deadline does not ban a student from applying. College Board says to submit as soon as possible. Still, the accommodation may not be approved or arranged for that test date.

An approval completed less than 14 days before testing may also arrive too late. The school may not have time to put the plan in place.

Do not copy a deadline from an old post, a school email, or another student's test date. Check the current College Board table for the exact administration you plan to take.

Paper testing changes the test-day plan

Paper testing for SAT Weekend is a school-based accommodation. The student usually tests at their school instead of taking a standard seat at a weekend test center.

School-based SAT Weekend testing uses a 14-day window. It begins on the published SAT date and ends on the Friday of the second week. The school schedules the test within that window.

That arrangement takes coordination. The school needs the correct materials, trained staff, and a testing room.

A homeschooled student should contact the College Board accommodations office early. The same applies when a student's school cannot administer the test.

The paper test is also not a printed copy of the usual screen experience. College Board describes it as a longer, linear test form with different timing. Students record answers in the paper test book. Those responses are later entered into the digital testing system.

Other approved accommodations may change the schedule again. Extended time or extra breaks can affect the timing. A human reader or large print can change the room, materials, or number of testing days.

The student's approval letter and school plan control what happens.

Practice on the format named in the approval

Our usual SAT advice is to train on a screen. That matches the test most students will take. Paper approval creates a real exception to that advice.

A student who will test on paper should not spend every timed session inside the digital app. Screen practice can still teach the content. It does not fully prepare the student for a longer linear form. It also cannot copy paper answer recording or the approved timing plan.

Start with the approval letter. Confirm that it says paper testing for digital assessments. Then ask the school coordinator where the test will happen. Confirm the planned date and every other approved accommodation.

Next, match practice to that plan. Use paper for timed Reading and Writing and Math work. Practice marking answers clearly in the test book. Use the exact extended-time and break rules in the approval.

Keep one current deadline in the family calendar. Work backward from it for medical or school records, parent consent, and the school's submission time. Leave room for College Board to ask for more documentation.

For the student targeting October 3, 2026, the action date is August 14, 2026. For a later SAT, use that test's row in the official table. The paper SAT is real, but access begins with documented need and an early request.
