The AP Calculus setup point is real, but so are the eligibility rules

How AP Calculus free-response points really split between setup and answer, when the 2025 scoring guidelines pay a lone setup, when a point becomes not eligible, and how imported wrong values can still earn.

Nine points a question, and the first is often just the setup

Each AP Calculus free-response question is worth 9 points. The exam has six of them, on both the AB and BC tests, and the section counts for half your exam score.

Look at how College Board labels those points in the 2025 scoring guidelines published on AP Central. Question 1 on the AB exam asked for the average number of acres affected by an invasive plant. Part (a) is split into two points. Point 1 is labeled "Average value formula." Point 2 is labeled "Answer." The guidelines track a question's nine points as P1 through P9, and that shorthand matters below, because the rules are written point by point.

Question 2 asked for the area of a shaded region. Point 1 there is labeled "Form of integrand." It is earned for presenting the integral of g(x) minus f(x), with or without the dx at the end. Point 2 is again "Answer."

That pattern runs through much of the section. One point for writing the right mathematical object. A separate point for the number it produces. This is not a grading rumor passed between students. It is printed in the official scoring guidelines, point by point.

A correct setup with nothing after it still gets paid

On parts built this way, the two points are scored separately. The 2025 guidelines say it directly: "P2 is earned for the correct answer, with or without supporting work." The same wording appears for P4. Read that rule in both directions. A correct answer can earn its point without visible work on that part. And a correct setup keeps its point when the arithmetic after it fails or never happens. Write the correct integral, run out of time before evaluating it, and that setup point is still earned.

Notice what the rule does not say. It does not say every part works this way, and it does not promise a point for trying. Setup and answer points are frequently separate, which is exactly what makes an attempt worth writing. Whether they are separate on a given part is printed in that part's own scoring notes, not guaranteed anywhere.

A blank part earns zero. The student who knew the integral but wrote nothing gets the same score on that part as the student who knew nothing at all.

It also helps to know that points are earned, never subtracted. A wrong statement can cost you the chance at a nearby point, but it cannot take away one you already earned.

Sloppy work in the middle is forgiven case by case, not by rule

Students hide work because they fear a wrong middle step will cost them. The 2025 guidelines soften that fear, but read their wording closely. Walking through one sample response, the guidelines say: "This response earns P1 for the integral. It also earns P2 for the correct answer. (In this instance, incorrect linkage is not considered in scoring.)"

In this instance. That is the guidelines' own hedge. One response, with a correct integral and a correct answer, kept both points despite a wrong string of notation connecting them. The forgiveness was granted for that response. It was not announced as a policy. Treat it as a reason to keep writing when your notation turns ugly, not as a license to set unequal things equal. A clear chain is still the safe chain.

Rounding has a stated safety net. The general notes say that within each free-response question, "at most one point is not earned for inappropriate rounding." One rounding slip cannot bleed across a whole question.

A bare number on the same page can earn nothing

The setup rule cuts in both directions. Some points require visible mathematics, and a naked number does not qualify. In question 1, part (b), students had to find when the instantaneous rate of change matched the average rate. The scoring notes warn that writing t equals 1.282, a stray value with no equation around it, earned neither of the part's two points.

The answer point in that part is labeled "Answer with supporting work." Your calculator can find the number. Without the equation you solved sitting on the page, the point stays out of reach.

So the section pays for mathematics in either direction. A setup without an answer can earn something. An answer without a setup can earn nothing at all.

A wrong early step can lock later points away

Now the caveat that makes the universal version of this advice false. Parts of a question build on each other, and some points carry eligibility rules. Question 1, part (c) asked for a limit describing the long-run rate of change, so the limit had to be taken of the rate function. For a response that wrote the limit of the amount function instead, the guidelines are blunt: "A response that includes lim C(t) is not eligible to earn P6." Not a deduction. Not eligible. That point is out of reach no matter how cleanly the rest of the work is written.

The construction repeats. Another response "earns P5 but is not eligible for P6." In part (d), one sample response "does not earn P7, earns P8, and is not eligible for P9." Notice that the damage is contained, since P8 still scored. But specific points close off completely once a particular earlier step goes wrong.

So before writing, check which function and which quantity the part actually asks about. The setup point rewards the right object, not any object.

An imported wrong value can still earn the next point

Here is the rule that makes attempting a later part worth it even after an earlier part went badly, and it is the honest replacement for "never leave anything blank and you will get points." The guidelines let values travel forward between parts, right or wrong. One question's notes read: "values of g(0) and g(12) can be imported from part C. A response can earn P9 with an answer that is consistent with the imported values."

Sit with what that means. Suppose your part C values are wrong. Carry them into the next part anyway and do the correct mathematics with them, and the later point can still be earned, because your answer is judged against the values you imported, not against the true ones. For that point, the standard is consistency, not correctness.

And when an earlier part produced nothing at all, set up the later part with a letter standing in for the missing value. Readers score the mathematics you put on the page, and on many parts the method is where the points sit.

Spend the last five minutes writing first lines

Change how you close the section. When time is short, stop finishing problems and start starting them. For every untouched part, write its first line: the integral with its limits, the derivative set equal to zero, the equation of the tangent line at the given point. Say what your variables mean. Cross nothing out. Not because a point is promised for showing up. Because setup and answer points are frequently scored apart, and because a value from an earlier part, even a wrong one, can be imported into later work that still earns.

Then practice this honestly, which requires paper. If the setup count is low, those are the easiest points on the whole exam to start collecting.
