If you are bringing your own laptop to the October ACT, 12 October is your real deadline

ACT's wording is blunt: the check must be completed before the cutoff or your registration will be canceled.
Personal Chromebooks are not supported, so check that before the deadline rather than on it.
This applies only to students who chose their own device, not to those using a test centre computer.

If you are taking the ACT on 17 October on your own laptop, the date that can cost you the test is 12 October. That is the cutoff for the ACT Gateway device readiness check, and ACT's wording about missing it is not soft: "Must be completed before cutoff date or your registration will be canceled."

Not delayed. Not flagged at the door. Cancelled.

Registering is not the last thing you do

Most test deadlines work the way students expect. Registration opens, registration closes, you turn up. The mental model is that once you have paid, the administrative part is finished and everything left is studying.

The ACT does not work that way, and this is the second requirement that proves it. There is a separate photo deadline that can also cancel a paid registration, which we have written about before. Now there is a device check with its own date and the same consequence. Two different requirements, two different deadlines, both landing after you have already paid and both able to undo it.

The lesson is not really about October. It is that "I registered" and "I am registered" are different states, and the gap between them is where paid test dates disappear.

Five days is less room than it sounds

The cutoff sits five days before the test. That sounds like slack, and it is not, because the check is not a box you tick. It is a readiness process on a specific machine, and a machine can fail it.

If your laptop turns out to be unsupported, five days is what you have to find another one, borrow from school, or work out whether you can switch to a computer supplied by the test centre. Doing the check the day you read this costs you a few minutes. Doing it on the 11th and discovering a problem costs you the option to fix it calmly.

A personal Chromebook will not do it

ACT does not support personal Chromebooks for this. If your plan was to bring your own Chromebook, that plan does not meet the requirement, and finding out on the deadline is the worst version of finding out.

This is narrower than it may sound, and worth stating precisely: it is about the device you bring. It says nothing about what a test centre provides, and it is not a claim that Chromebooks are absent from every ACT setting.

The part ACT does not spell out

Here is what we could not establish, and we would rather say so than guess.

We do not know what recourse exists if your own device fails the check close to the cutoff. ACT does cover a nearby situation: if a school will not install Gateway, it tells students to contact ACT so the registration can be updated, and says that may mean a change of date, location or mode. That is a different problem from your laptop failing the check, and we are not going to treat one as the other.

What ACT does not state on the page carrying this rule is whether you can move to a test centre computer after a failed check, whether anyone warns you before the cancellation lands, or whether a cancelled registration can be reinstated.

That uncertainty is exactly why the useful move is to do the check now, while any answer to those questions still has time to matter. If you do need to ask ACT something, asking on 16 September and asking on 11 October are very different situations.

What this does not apply to

If you registered to use a computer supplied by the test centre, this is not your deadline. Online ACT registrants choose between their own device and a centre machine, and this requirement belongs to the first group.

We are also not claiming this is the only date that matters, or that finishing the device check tells you anything about your photo status. They are separate requirements. Clearing one says nothing about the other.

There is a detail here that is easy to misread. For the 17 October test, the photo upload deadline is also 12 October. Two different requirements, two different ways to lose the registration, landing on the same day. Seeing 12 October ticked off for one of them tells you nothing about the other.

Do it today, not on the 12th

Open ACT Gateway, run the readiness check on the exact laptop you intend to carry into the test centre, and confirm it completes. Not a similar laptop, not the family desktop. The one going with you.

Then put 12 October in whatever you actually look at, alongside 17 October. One of those dates is the test. The other decides whether you get to sit it.
